Be an Intelligent Online Shopper – 7 Tips for Virtual Customers

To some people like me, online shopping is the most wonderful thing that the internet has made possible. For those who are either extremely choosey or have no time or love to explore all options before buying, online shopping is a life-saver.

But of course, there are pros and cons to everything. There are many issues people face with regard to quality/size of products, fraudulent websites, bad customer service or simple distrust for the entire concept of buying off the internet.

So I have compiled a list of tips and tricks that will help you shop online more intelligently, gaining optimum benefit off the deal. Rest assured, I am a very experienced virtual customer – I have barely bought anything off the rack in past couple of years!

Here’s my list of do’s and don’ts

Do not trust a website with a botched up user-interface. My general advice is that you buy stuff off of standard websites that have created a good reputation for themselves. But sometimes, it so happens that you find that rare brand of clothes/shoes/accessories/supplements, etc on an obscure website that you have never heard of. In such a case, judge using the user-interface. If it is sophisticated and well-designed, it is unlikely to be a fraud scheme (creating such sites requires much investment, hardly fitting the MO of cheats). To be on the safer side still, bill your order to Cash-on-Delivery.
Always look for coupon codes before ordering. Most frequent users subscribe to newsletters with shopping portals, but sometimes, even despite that, you may miss out on some discount schemes. However, there are some websites which are exclusive directories recording all schemes/coupon codes that are presently active on a site. Just do a Google search before ordering typing “<website name> coupon code <month, year>” to get a list of active deals on different websites. A few pennies saved are a few purchases more!
Order two sizes when in doubt. For those who are always paranoid about sizes and fitting, order two sizes of the same product, be it shoes, clothes, lingerie or something else. When delivered, try on both sizes and keep whatever fits better. You will have to go through the process of returning the product which is slightly tedious, but next is tip will make that easier too.
Take precautions for returning purposes. Most people find the process of returning bought items extremely putting off. It requires too much effort and time. Well, here are some things you can do. When opening your package, cut at the original seams so even the outermost packaging isn’t destroyed. You will then no need to repack the product, just re-seal it instead for postage. Also, keep a template mail in your drafts to use for all returns so you don’t have to write a new one each time. Just add in Order numbers and some specific details for every return.
Make online payments whenever possible. This is because you will avoid many hassles. One, you’ll not have to respond to any confirmation call (pre-orders are instantly confirmed). Also, when the package arrives, you can get someone else to receive it (such as a neighbour, house-help, etc) if you are not around, since no cash needs be exchanged. You will also forgo the invariable scrounge for exact change which ensues when the delivery boy arrives. And most importantly, in case of a return request, your money will be credited into your bank account. With Cash-on-Delivery orders, the money gets converted into store credit, which necessitates another purchase for the site.
Always refer to specific size charts. Every site and seller provides sizing information. Most people simply assume that the size they usually wear for standard brands will work. However, when shopping online, be doubly careful by re-checking the size chart provided with each specific item. Also, follow the chart always; if you usually wear a Small, but this chart measurement suggests Medium, go for the latter.
Do not hesitate to return. As mentioned before, many people find the return procedure bothersome. Often that results in them keeping ill-fitting or dissatisfactory products and later holding the websites/virtual shopping responsible for their bad experience. Do not do this; make the extra effort to return within the prescribed time, and you will realize how convenient the service is.

If you keep these things in mind, you will eventually be able to shop online like a pro. And keep at it, after all, practice makes perfect. Best part is, shopping is something you won’t mind practising at all!

Katrina Kaif Makes her Debut at the Cannes Film Festival 2015

Another Indian diva was added to the list of invitees at the International annual Cannes Film Festival. Stunning Bollywood A-lister Katrina Kaif attended the events of May 13 and May 14 as brand ambassador of L’Oreal Paris. Yes, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor have more company now!

Katrina had the shutter-bugs in a fine frenzy, though it’s not very clear whether for the right or wrong reasons. Both her Red Carpet outfits have received mixed reviews, so let’s have a look at what she wore before we decide whether her first appearance was a hit or miss.

On the opening night of the Cannes Film Festival, Katrina Kaif donned an off-shoulder, black and ivory Oscar de la Renta gown for the premiere of La Tete Haute. A masterpiece of intricate lace work and detailing, the dress was from the designer’s Fall 2015 collection. The actress accessorized it with beautiful dangers and a matching bracelet, leaving her neck bare. Her makeup reflected an attempted at a sultry, sun-kissed look, with oodles of bronzer covering her naturally fair skin. Also, her hair was colored burgundy and arranged in an almost retro-inspired, wavy side sweep.

The fashion police has not been appreciative of Katrina’s debut look. International press has gone as far as to label it as a “Red-Carpet-Dont’s” example. While the dress in itself is undeniably lovely, it is perhaps the makeup and hair that hampered its appeal. The faux-dusky complexion contrasted badly with her burgundy locks and she looked slightly washed out with the nude lip color. But all is not lost. Top marks to Katrina on selecting a gorgeous dress, even if she didn’t get the overall look quite right. Maybe next time?

Now to Katrina’s second Red Carpet appearance, which was at the premiere of Mad Max: Fury Road. She was seen in a scarlet red Elie Saab gown and sky high, eight inch heels. Accentuating her curvy figure, this high-necked dress with a cinched waist had fine floral motifs adding a dose of chic glamour. Katrina kept the makeup minimal and hair simply parted in the center. Black nail polish and deep red lips completed her elegantly styled ensemble.

Many fashion reviews, especially those produced by Indian magazines, have found this to be a good outfit – it is contemporary, classy and wonderful. But many have also pointed out that it was a “safe choice” and “utterly forgettable”. Moreover, the burgundy hair, which Katrina has dyed so for her upcoming movie Fitoor, clashed with the red of the dress, making her appear a little too fiery in an already red background.

So, let’s put it this way – Katrina’s first stint at Cannes was no roaring success. But, fortunately, it wasn’t a complete disaster either. True to her usual style, she played it comfy and safe. In fact, her most impressive outfits were those she wore for press functions and interviews off-the-red carpet. Have a look.

Well, not too good, not too bad. This is all we can say. Hopefully, she’ll surprise us with something more wondrous at her next Cannes appearance.

It’s all about prints this season, and it’s got our creative fashion juices flowing. If you love your prints and have no problem pattern clashing your way through summer, then by all means, go right ahead! If you’re a little more apprehensive, however, then you’re in luck. Gingham
Ah, that old favourite – gingham. Love it or hate it, it’s totally in this season. If you’re a little unsure when it comes to wearing prints, gingham’s a great place to start. You can go for colours that you love and feel comfortable in, and there’s even a great deal of choice in terms of the size of print you go for depending on how bold you’re feeling.

Graphic Floral

It’s practically impossible to go through summer and ignore the overwhelming amount of floral in high street shops, but if you’re tired of chintzy pretty florals, go graphic. Graphic florals are certainly bold, but they’re certainly now and, when done right, can look down-right fabulous.

Aquatic
Aquatic print is the new nautical. We’ve migrated from the sea-side and yacht deck right into the sea, so dive in and embrace this trend. Anything aqua, sea foam, or general sea-like greens and blues goes, with gorgeous mermaid-inspired frocks and gowns. This is our personal favourite of this season’s trends.

Candy Stripe
Again, if you’re a tad nervous about going too loud with you prints, simple, geometric prints like candy stripe are perfect. Traditional candy stripe print is red and blue, but any colour goes. We think that pastels work perfectly here for that effortlessly breezy summer vibe.

Artistic
Think abstract expressionism: Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, Cy Twombly. This painterly trend is wonderfully fun, so really go to town with it. This is not something to do by halves, so try pairing the splattered paint look with another decadent print for extra-awesome impact.

Five Summer Salads for Salad Haters

So summer’s here, meaning we’re all begrudgingly obliged to ditch the stodgy carbs for those leafy greens. If you’re a self-professed salad hater, don’t despair. There are plenty of salads out there that are not only super healthy, but also super delicious, super gorgeous and super easy! Here are just five of those amazing recipes. We’d love to know what you think!

Tabbouleh
Serves: 4-6

Bulgur – 1 cup
Red onion – 1 cup
Scallions – 5
Chives – 1 small bunch
Cucumber – 1
Cherry tomatoes – 2 cups
Parsley – 1 bunch
Mint – 1/4 cup
Olive oil – 1/4 cup
Lemon juice – 3
Salt and pepper

Cover the bulgur with cold water and let stand for an hour. Drain and set aside.
Dice the onion and cucumber and mince the scallions, chives, parsley and mint. Halve the cherry tomatoes.
Season the bulgur and stir through the chopped vegetables. Toss in olive oil and lemon juice and season to taste.

Shrimp Avocado Salad

Serves: 6

Shrimp – 2 pounds boiled or steamed and peeled and deveined
Avocados – 2
Red onion – 2 tablespoons diced
Olive oil – 1/4 cup
Red wine vinegar – 1/4 cup
Garlic powder – 1/2 teaspoon
Parsley – 1 teaspoon chopped
Dijon mustard – 1 teaspoon
Salt and pepper

Mix the shrimp, sliced avocado and onion.
Mix olive oil, red wine vinegar, garlic powder, parsley, Dijon mustard and seasoning well.
Dress the shrimp and avocado and serve.

Greek Cucumber Salad with Lemon and Feta
Serves: 1

Cucumber – 1/2 seedless
Green pepper – 1/4 chopped
Grape tomatoes – 1/3 cup halved
Kalamata olives – 5 pitted
Red onion – 1 tablespoon sliced
Lemon juice – 1/2
Feta – 1 ounce, sliced
Olive oil – 1/2 tablespoon
Oregano – 1/2 teaspoon minced
Salt and pepper

Dice the cucumber and mix with pepper, tomatoes, olives and red onion.
Squeeze the lemon over the salad and drizzle olive oil. Toss with oregano and salt and pepper.
Top with feta cheese, drizzle with a little extra olive oil and serve.

Honey Lime Rainbow Fruit Salad

Strawberries – 1 pound diced
Pineapple – 1 pound diced
Blueberries – 12 ounces
Red grapes – 12 ounces halved
Kiwi – four peeled and diced
Banana – 2 peeled and diced
Mandarin oranges in juice – 1 15 ounce can drained and halved
Honey – 1/4 cup
Lime zest – 2 limes
Lime juice – 1 tablespoon

Mix together the fruit.
Whisk the honey, lime zest and lime juice.
Toss the fruit with the honey and lime and serve.

Raw Pad Thai Salad
Serves: 2

Zucchini – 1 julienned
Carrots – 2 julienned
Red pepper – 1 sliced
Red cabbage – 1 cup sliced
Edamame – 3/4 cup
Green onions – 3 sliced
Hemp seeds – 1 tablespoon
Sesame seeds – 1 teaspoon
Garlic – 1 clove
Almond butter – 1/4 cup
Lime juice – 2 tablespoons
Tamari – 2 tablespoons
Water – 2 tablespoons
Maple syrup – 2 1/2 tablespoons
Toasted sesame oil – 1/2 tablespoon
Ginger – 1 teaspoon grated

Toss together the zucchini, carrots, pepper and cabbage.
Blast the garlic, almond butter, lime juice, tamari, water, maple syrup, toasted sesame oil and ginger in a food processor.
Top the salad with the edamame, green onion, hemp seeds and sesame seeds.
Dress and serve.

Common Nail Problems and How to Fix Them

Beautiful nails, either painted or bear, are the best accessory ever! The one fashion statement you can make without spending a fortune is sporting wonderful nails that everyone envies.

But I have to admit that good nails do not come easy and can’t be grown overnight. Most people who have naturally strong and sturdy nails are either genetically blessed or maintain a very healthy diet. Either way, if you are not one of those people, having nice nails is going to require some extra effort.

Most of us can judge nail quality based on their shape, size and colour as well as frequency of chipping and breakage. If you are victim to the following nail problems all the time, there are some natural remedies which may be of help. Read on and find out.

Slow Nail Growth

The average fingernail grows at the rate of one-tenth an inch per month. But if yours aren’t able to keep up that face here are some things you could try:

Apply warm olive oil or coconut oil on your nails and cuticles before bed every night. Both deeply nourish the nail bed, thus promoting growth.
Soak your nails in fresh orange or lemon juice for 10 minutes every day. Follow up by washing and moisturising them. Vitamin-C-rich, these juices aid collagen production and hence nail-growth.

Brittle Nails

Sick of your nails chipping and breaking every other day? Your brittle nails need some natural goodness which you can get this way:

Prepare a solution of equal parts raw apple cider vinegar and water. Soak your nails in it for a few minutes every day. Rich in magnesium, potassium, calcium and iron, apple cider vinegar will make your nails stronger in no time.
Mix a few drops of tea tree oil with vitamin E oil. Apply on nails and leave overnight. The solution will deeply hydrate your nails, nourishing them such that breakage reduces.

Yellowed Nails

Those whose nails are always painted find them to have yellowed when they remove the polish. There are other medical causes for yellowing of nails which must be treated differently but if it’s polish-based stains, here’s what you can do:

Always apply a clear base coat before putting on other colours.
Mix two parts of baking soda and lemon juice each with one part olive oil. Apply this thick paste on your nails and leave for a few minutes. Rinse off and moisturize. Repeat procedure every 2 weeks.
Apply whitening toothpaste on your nails for a few minutes and then scrub it off gently using a toothbrush. Rinse off and moisturize. Do this 2-3 times a week till stains are removed.

Nail-Biting Habit

The awful habit of biting nails is as much a health hazard as it is off-putting. There are several ways in which you can curb the instinct if you are a nail-biter:

Always keep your nails trimmed so there is less potential to bite.
Apply neem oil on your nails and allow it to dry. Whenever you bite on them unconsciously, the bitter taste will deter you for sure.
Wear artificial nails for a few weeks which will prevent you from accessing and biting your real nail. Hopefully that should cure you of your addiction.

Maybelline New York has come out with Diamond Glow Quad Eye shadow palettes in 5 shades i.e. Lilac Mauve, Ocean Blue, Wine Pink, Copper Brown and Grey Pink. Each of these palettes has 4 vibrant shades in the same colour family. Today we are going to review the Grey Pink Shade. The packaging of the palette is sleek and strong with a transparent plastic top and a black bottom with instructions on how to use the product. It is quiet compact, travel friendly and comes with a small double ended eye shadow brush.

This set contains:

A – Highlight Colour
B & C – Medium Colours
D – Accent Colour
A double ended applicator with a bigger and smaller sponge.

How to use: (As per the instructions provided on the back)

Apply A on your entire eye lid and inner corner with the bigger sponge.
Blend B on your upper medium lid with the opposite side of the bigger sponge.
Blend C on lower medium lid with the smaller sponge.
Use D with the opposite side of the smaller sponge to line on the lash line.

All the shades are super shimmery and soft. But when it comes to pigmentation it’s not highly pigmented and needs a primer or an eye shadow base to make the colour pop. Also on applying all of them together it gets too shimmery and glittery. Shade A & C are quiet similar and the pink (Shade B) is too dull for warmer/dusky skin tones, as well as slight amount of fall out visible. I would recommend you to use these shades separately to create differently looks and mix it up with a matte shade from a different palette to reduce the shimmer. This palette is great for a night look and for a silvery smokey eye.

Cons:

Not highly pigmented.
The applicator (double ended eye shadow brush) is definitely a pass. (Very rough and poor quality)

Super-Chic and Always Crowded – M-Block Market, Greater Kailash 1

All Delhites have heard of, if not explored the popular main market of Greater Kailash Part I. A hub of shopping, yummy food and lively banter, it is one of those few street markets, aka non-air-conditioned retail spaces- where you will brave the weather to enjoy the pleasing environs. And pleasing they are no doubt, with a fine mix of branded stores and street stalls at which to empty your wallets. If you are visiting for the first time, this rectangular concrete mini-jungle (oh, wait, there’s a small park in its midst) there are some things you need to know:

• The market may overwhelm you with its abundance of buying options. Don’t worry, I’ll help you with that soon.
• The street stall owners are very astute and can sense naive, non-hagglers from a mile away. So beware!
• All big food chains, from Starbucks to Burger King have outlets here. But these you can visit anywhere. Go in for local specialties instead like the famous “Aunty ke momos” or Prince Paan’s flavoured treats.
• The market it always crowded. Always! But on all evenings and the weekend, you will literally be rubbing shoulders with excited shoppers. So mornings, past 12pm actually (these GK people love their sleep), is the time to visit if you are on a serious shopping excursion.
• There are a couple of rather temperamental ATMs here. It would be a good idea for you to stock up on cash, especially if you are up for street shopping.

Well, these are the basics you need to know. Now the important stuff – what are the best shops that all divas must visit? I have to warn you though, the list that follows does not mention any of the big brands – you obviously need no help there. My focus is the lesser-known shops where you can get yourself a good deal.

Pret:
This is like a boutique-style-street-stall. What sets it apart from other shops is that it has a good collection of fashionable clothes (both casual and party wear) but not the typical stuff you get at street stalls. Buy from here and you are not at risk of spotting the same dress on another female while on a round of M-Block market itself (yes, that may happen if you buy from a street-stall). The USP of this shop is that the prices are good (almost as low as the clothes outside) not too expensive ordinarily and no short of steal-deals during sales.

Madame:
If you want to shop for Indian clothes, and slightly dressy ones at that, this is where you should go. Madame has a good collection of ethnic clothes as well as jewellery and accessories, so it’s your one-stop-shop for Indian occasion-wear. The prices are decent as well, lower than the likes of Meena Bazaar.

Goyal Stores:
For cosmetics, this is the one store which will offer the widest possible range, including those international budget brands like Boots, Jergens, etc and also high-end perfumes at slightly discounted prices. Plus, the latest products by all common brands like Lakme, Colorbar, etc, find their way to the counters here very quickly. The staff is very helpful and will make useful suggestions in a way that isn’t bothersome in the least.

Devil’z Tattoos:
M-Block is also the hub of all things hip and wild. You want a good, safe, permanent tattoo, this is where you go in Delhi. Though there are several popular tattoo parlours in this market, many claim that Devil’z Tattoos is the best in Delhi (having got two tattoos done here personally, I have no reason to doubt those claims). Do book an appointment in advance though – there’s a big rush here, especially on weekends.

Siloffer:
While Devilz’ is for tattoos, the best piercings happen at Siloffer. It is one of the oldest, most famous piercing salons in Delhi, with experienced staff to puncture holes in your skin as desired (I got three-sets of ear piercings done from this place and can hence vouch for its quality service). They have a huge range of silver and marcasite jewellery as well, though the prices are slightly inflated, as compared to those at other markets.

Back-side Street Stall:
As far as the clothes’ stalls go, there are at least over 15 of them in M-Block. They sell the latest must-haves of street fashion – trendy tops, dresses, suits, jumpsuits and more. There is one which sells innerwear and lingerie as well. However, as mentioned above, many a times, they keep very common styles which are available at every other vendor, only at a higher price than those at Lajpat Nagar or Sarojini, given the up-scale environment around. So go to the street vendor opposite the car-park-entrance and next to Bengal Sweets (at that end of the market where famous eatery Brown Sugar is). He has a large collection with several pieces you won’t spot everywhere. You will have to browse through stacks of merchandise but will end up picking up a few items for sure. Remember to bargain for a good deal.

Laxmi Store:
If you want to buy lingerie, nightwear or beachwear even, head to Laxmi Store which is a basement shop, right next to The Body Shop outlet. It has all the regular budget brands such as Lovable and Enamor, as well as mid-range ones like Amante, Triumph and Bwitch. You won’t get the likes of La Senza and VS here, but those you’re more likely to find in malls anyway. They have, of late, also stared stocking sari blouses here.

Amazon India Fashion Week 2015 #Day 4, March 28

In rolled the fourth day of the AIFW 2015 and got with it, a plethora of fabulous collections whose outfits are likely to be sported by many by the end of the year. An event jam-packed with 10 shows, each more awe-inspiring than the previous, day 4 of the AIFW was certainly one to watch out for. Read on to know all that happened!

Surprise, Surprise!

It’s as if all designers conspired to make this day full of pleasant surprises for its audience. Most collections had a dramatic conceptual background causing designers to bring much theatrics to the ramp. The show began with a bright and youthful collection by Nikhita called ‘Mynah Desgins’ which capitalized on the beauty of red and black shades. Sahil Kochar’s ‘Hara Barno’ was the talk of the day, while Vogue Fashion’s line ‘Bodice’ was commended for its wearable, modest outfits. Poonam Bhagat’s Picasso-inspired collection was spectacular no less, though it is Aneeth Arora’s ‘Pero’ which captured all attention with its thespian emphasis. The last event of the day was the much-awaited Gaurav Gupta show whose signature gothic style and androgynous outfits were impeccably fabulous. What a day – thrilling, captivating, brilliant, as it was!

The Absolute Winners

‘Hara Barno’ by Sahil Kochar was striking and edgy, with a number of vibrant hues, complex patterns, asymmetrical silhouettes and regal embellishments lined up on the ramp.
Poonam Bhagat’s line took artistic inspiration from the cubist painter’s penchant for dots, lines and deep shades. Unique yet wearable, this Picasso-themed collection won appreciation for its classic, elegant outfits.
Playfully androgynous and distinctive outfits made Aneeth Arora’s military-inspired collection quite the hit. With Doc Martens, bomber jackets, khakis, berets and more, ‘Pero’ transformed feminine clothing into a statement of confidence and power.
Gaurav’s Gupta’s creations played with outfit structure and colour to bring together a collection that was subtly glamorous.
A special after-show discussion on Indian fashion was hosted at Veda Cafe with Dame Zandra Rhodes, Riju Kumar and Rajeev Sethi chairing the conversation. The panellists discussed India’s presence in the global glamour industry and the possible approaches it could employ therewith.

The third day of the AIFW 2015 was somewhat less busy though as exciting as the others. It represented a celebration of the spirit of fusion. Sophisticated combinations of traditional styles and international trends lit up the ramp with their vibrancy. Here’s an account of the highlights from day 3 of the AIFW 2015.

East Meets West Meets Winter

Winter-wear has never been as quirkily fashionable as on this day. The opening show by Promita Banerjee as well as the following by Tanvi Kedia combined the goodness of Indian fabrics and embroidery with western winter-wear like pants, skirts, jackets and more. EKA’s new line of chic casuals presented much layering and native inspiration, while 11.11 used organic materials to craft an exquisite collection of handmade jackets. Sanchita’s youthful line of uber-glam winter-suited partywear was pitted against the risqué stylistics of Namrita Joshipura’s collection. The day ended with a power-packed performance by designer duo Pankaj and Nidhi – they brought bold and funky creations to the ramp, impressing the fashion police with their experimental aesthetics. All in all, a day of many fashion successes that left audiences quite satisfied.

The Must-Mentions

Tanvi Kedia’s ‘Jama’ used cultural motifs from Pakistan and Afghanistan and digital prints to embellish her collection of Indian winter-wear. Her eclectic sensibilities and elegant creations won a huge round of applause.
Inspired by Nyx, the Greek Goddess of the Night, Namrita Joshipura’s line was characterized by plunging necklines, cutwork, peek-a-boo embroidery, corset-like silhouettes and thigh-high slits. Such bold and beautiful outfits have been in short supply in the AIFW 2015, but Joshipura brought sexy back with much oomph.
11 used common people and not models to showcase their outfits on the ramp. They wanted their clothes to be modelled by members of their target audience which presents a refreshingly progressive and admirable approach to couture culture.

While Day 3 had several ning collections to offer, it had an aura of calm and subtle activity. The bustle of Day 4 is already calling so you should stay tuned to be part of it!

The Lakme Fashion Week Diaries #Day 6 #Grand Finale, March 22

As the final day of the Lakme Fashion Week 2015 came about, everything acquired a tinge of frenzied glory. From the designers and models to the ramps and audience, all was coloured with the impulse of a final phenomenal performance. This is what went down on the grand finale of the LFW 2015:

Saving the Best for Last

It’s like the Indian glamour industry conspired to save its most inspired creations for the last day. Kick-started by mosaic-inspired bold collection “My World of Glass” by Aartivijay Gupta, there was a line up of very several interesting designers to come. From Shubhika Davda’s “Twitterpated” with its popping colour, to Surbhi Shekar’s floral-inspired collection, high couture’s best was on display. A considerable amount of audience attention was taken up by the beach and resort-wear collection “Henri’s Garden” by Shivan and Narresh. But there is no denying the fact that the grand finale event, Anamika Khanna’s much awaited “Sculpt”, was the most impressive spectacle of all.

Must-Mentions

It is hard to ascertain which designers emerged as most successful since all showcased collections that were brilliant in their own right. Nonetheless, some collections, such as Mandira Bedi’s fantasy sari collection – with its brilliant combination of traditional and modern elements – lit up the ramp like none else. Karan Berry and Leon Vaz’s designs for their label “Karleo” dazzled the stage with sequinned, embellished gowns, twinkling shift dresses and flowy skirts. Wendell Rodricks’ “Popology” fused the designer’s love for bright colours with his fascination with the ‘60s styles and silhouettes. And concluding the 15^th-year anniversary event, Anamika Khanna’s “Sculpt” simply stole the show away. With a range of experimental silhouettes and metallic hues coupled with a fearless merger of Indian handicraft, her avant garde style created a most intense fashion experience. This was the perfect end to a very special glamour event.

The Stars of the Night

The list of Bollywood appearances on the ramp this day is rather long. With Rajkummar Rao as showstopper at Kunal Anil Tanna’s “Ume Matsuri” event and the graceful Shabana Azmi concluding Mandira Bedi’s show, the ramp was bright with stardust all day long. Sophie Choudry and Riya Sen modelled for Shubhika Davda and Karan Berry and Leon Vaz respectively. But the evening’s shiniest glitter came from the effervescent beauty Kareen Kapoor, who alongside being the face of Lakme, is also designer Anamika’s muse.

The Lakme Fashion Week Diaries #Day 1, March 17, 2015

It’s that time of the year when the who’s who of fashion wow us all with their oomph and fabulousness. The Lakme Fashion Week is here and how! It was none other than India’s ethnic-wear royalty, Sabyaschi Mukherjee, who gave the event its truly grand opening. Here’s the scoop on what went down on the first evening of this star-studded affair:

The Big Bang

The LFW 2015 began with the mightiest bang at the Richardson and Cruddas Mills, the beautifully rustic grounds nestling in the heart of Mumbai. The grandeur of the ambience was perfectly complimented by the dramatic setting – a 200×20 feet ramp brought into focus with multi-laser lights and fully-filled seating. While this is where most of the succeeding events are also scheduled to be held, some offsite shows, including the collection by Manish Malhotra and Anamika Khanna, are to be witnessed at other glamorous locales.

A Spectacular Collection

Who better to kick-start this fashion mega-event than the celebrated Bengali designer Sabyasachi? As all eyes were centred on the ramp, his new collection “Big Love”, left the audiences mesmerized. It was everything one wanted and more. Strongly inspired by the 70s Indian fashion, the garments represented a fusion of regal colours, bold designs and combination styling (with east-meets-west flavours thrown into the mix). The 105 outfits, modelled by no less than 62 stunning divas and hunks, garnered brilliant reviews from the high and mighty of the glamour industry. What a glorious beginning to the Lakme Fashion Week 2015!

The Glittering Night

As with any such event, there were a number of Bollywood A-listers and Page-3 personnel who graced the occasion with their presence. Several actresses donned Sabyasachi outfits to cheer on their beloved designer. While Deepika Padukone, Kalki Koechlin and Divya Khosla Kumar wore lovely maxis, Kajol, Sridevi and Rani Mukherjee went in for traditional Indian wear with exquisite saris. The night glittered with Sabyasachi magic both on and off the ramp.

Sari Blouses – What to Wear, When

With weddings, their multiple functions and a bunch of other parties to attend every now and then, we Indian fashionistas have to keep our saris ready. The thing is, saris you may have enough, but unless paired with the perfect blouse, the show remains incomplete.

A blouse that perfectly compliments your sari is the cherry on the cake, the Bonnie to its Clyde (Christian to its Dior too, if you will). So make sure that when you are either designing your blouse or buying it off the rack, it not only matches your sari, but is an intelligent fashion choice that’ll make the diva in you proud.

Now there are no hard and fast rules here. But some facts you have to acknowledge:

The sari blouse can make or break your look.
Blouses are sexy but sometimes one can go so wrong with them!
Not every kind of blouse is suitable for every kind of gathering or occasion.

Thus, when it comes to selecting your blouse, think about the following things.

Weddings

Now when dressing for the breathlessly-awaited, all important shaadi, the top three things you should remember:

There’s going to be a huge crowd, full of people all ages and different sensibilities. Your blouse should be such that draws the kind of attention you are comfortable with. Typically, stylish yet understated options would include sequined cholis and dori blouses. If you are unafraid to make a bold statement, deep backs or net-backed ones would be great options.
Weddings, especially if you are amongst the close relatives, are long-drawn affairs. Make sure you are clad such that your attire does not become a tedious headache beyond a point. Off-shoulder blouses, tight corsets and single-knot blouses are thus the ones to avoid.
The blouse you wear here is going to be captured in a number of photos and memories. You’ll probably not be wearing it again for a while, so let it not be one of your favorite, versatile go-to blouses. In fact, weddings are when wearing an exactly matching blouse (perhaps from the attached blouse-piece) is most recommended.

Pre-Wedding Functions

For the other wedding-related mini-functions, keep in mind these few things:

The crowd is more exclusive here, mostly people you are very familiar with. Your attire will certainly not go unnoticed so this is your moment to go all out. From bra-lets to halters, spaghetti straps to racer-back blouses, all will be perfect for the occasion.
These functions are abuzz with activity. Again, go for something non-fussy which doesn’t restrict movement. Nothing should mess with your moves on the dance floor!
Since you’re probably saving the best for last – the wedding – your sari for such functions may be lighter, with less work. Going in for a heavily embellished blouse would then ensure your outfit isn’t too plain without being too over-the-top either.

Other Parties

Party-time? Yes! Bring out the big guns, best blouses:

Parties are usually for a smaller-crowd and lesser amount of time so you have no logistical issues stopping you now. You can be as uninhibited in making your choice; if backless blouses, strap-less blouses, one-knot cholis and the like are your favourites, this is the time to get them out. If you have it, flaunt it here ladies!
At a party, you have to strike the right balance between casual and dressy. So, if your sari is heavy, go in for a single-toned (though sexy), simpler blouse. If your sari is light, let the blouse be really fancy.
If you go to many such gatherings, having a collection of blouses in all neutral shades and several styles may be a good idea. If you are not meeting the same people at all these different parties, you will get by without having to hunt for new blouses each time around.
