As we well know, women come in all shapes and sizes. When it comes to shopping for bikinis and swimsuits, however it can be tough to find the styles that are most flattering to your frame, especially when it comes to shopping online. We all have our body hang-ups, and having an ill-fitted swimsuit is only going to make you feel more self-conscious than you need to when lounging bib the pool or soaking up the sun on the beach. So we’ve created, especially for you, a guide to finding the right suit for your body shape, so you’ll feel like a genuine beach goddess on your summer vacation this year.
There are four basic body shapes for women: banana, apple, pear and hourglass, as illustrated below. Of course, these shapes sometimes go by different names, but you get the idea.
Banana
If you’re a banana shape, you’re pretty much straight up and down. You’ll be tall and long-limbed with small hips and a small bust. Since you’re likely to be well-proportioned, all you have to focus on is adding some embellishment to create the illusion of curves. Ruffles work particularly well. To keep that proportion, though, make sure that if you go for a bikini or tankini over a one-piece, both top and bottom are in the same colour.
Apple
If you’re an apple shape, you’ll be top-heavy with slim legs. You’re likely to have a large bust and broad shoulders with slimmer hips. Emphasising your hips will create more balance to your frame and make your shoulders and chest appear smaller. One great way to do this is to mix up your colours, so go for something darker and slimming on top, and brighter or lighter on the bottom. You could also try a skirt or ruffles on the bottom half.
Pear
The most common shape for women is the pear shape. You’re bottom-heavy, meaning you have wide hips and shapely thighs, with a narrow waist. You probably have a fairly small bust and a nice big booty. The same principle applies as with apple-shaped women, only the other way around. So go for something eye-catching on top and something slimming on the bottom. High-waisted bikinis will also work particularly well for you, keeping those love handles in place (don’t worry, we all have them!).
Hourglass
An hourglass is the most desirable female body shape. You’ll have a narrow waist with a sizeable bosom and curvy hips and thighs. As with the banana shape, you’re already in proportion, meaning that sticking to the same colour all over is a good idea to maintain that proportion. Again, high-waisted styles will look great on you, and going for a 50s-style cut will make the most of your womanly curves.
So there you have it, a definitive guide to swimsuits for any body shape. Get shopping and feel fabulous this summer!
