5 Fashion Lessons from Cannes 2018

The Cannes Film Festival has the crème de la crème of the glamour industry sashay down red carpets in their sartorial best year after year. Cannes 2018 was exactly that, and so much more. For a fashion monger and trend hawk, this event is an annual delight. There’s so much to observe and learn; the to-do’s and the never-ever are all on ready display.

Here are my top fashion lessons from Cannes 2018:

1. Styling Florals for a Formal Event
Florals are typically associated with day-time casual and semi-formal dressing. But Amber Heard and Thandie Newtown showed us how to pull off florals at a formal mega-event such as Cannes. While actress Amber wore lovely Valentino gown with a bell-shaped floral bodice, British beauty Thandie wowed in her Vivienne Westwood off-shoulder gown sporting the house’s “Absence of Roses” print.

What we learnt – When wearing florals to a formal do, go for outfits in delicate fabrics such as silk, satin, and georgette. The more distinctive the silhouette, the better.

2. Sheer Beauty with Sheer Outfits
Wearing sheer clothing is rather tricky, even for celebrities. Striking the right balance between elegance and provocativeness is no small task. Deepkia Padukone nailed it at the premiere of Sorry Angel, wearing a white Zuhair Murad gown with netted detailing. Model and reality TV star Kendall Jenner pushed the envelope further in a bold, layered Schiaparelli gown which accentuated her lean figure.

What we learnt – Sheer outfits are statements by themselves. Best to keep the hair and makeup simple, to avoid the look being too over-the-top.

3. Taking “Red Hot” a Step Further
The “Red Hot” outfit has become a common sight, especially on international red carpets. This time, several celebs added oomph to their red outfits in very interesting ways. Irina Shayk stole the show in her sultry, hip-baring Versace gown at one of the events. The antithesis to this look, but equally impressive, was Julianne Moore’s outfit at the opening ceremony – a simple Givenchy gown, with a beautiful tasseled train.

What we learnt – Styling red intelligently is important if you want to stand out. Layered stylistics, embellishments, and cut-work are few of the fashion-forward choices for the “Red Hot” look.

4. Nailing the Princess Look
Princess-gowns are a girl’s childhood fantasies come alive. But it challenging to carry such clothing well, without looking misplaced at a high-brow event. Sonam Kapoor showed us how it’s done her skin-toned couture gown by Vera Wang, at the Star Wars movie premiere. Similarly, Bella Hadid aced the princess look in a flowy, golden-beige Zuhair Murad gown at the Ash Is The Purest White premiere.

What we learnt – Uber-feminine gowns with typical princess silhouettes need to be styled well to avoid looking awkward. Like Sonam and Bella did, keep the makeup and hair classic-elegant, to steal the limelight in a good way.

5. Looking Confident Under Invasive Scrutiny
At events where the fashion police is a dime a dozen, and the press is relentlessly invasive, the attitude is as important as the outfit. Confidence is key. Canadian model Winnie Harlow walked the red carpet with the panache of a veteran in her eye-ball grabbing, green Ralph and Russo gown. Indian actress and Cannes debutant Kangana Ranaut also held her own in a series of gorgeous outfits, especially the beaded, silver jumpsuit by Nedret Taciroglu she wore to a Friday event.

What we learnt – If you have it, own it! Being a fashionable diva is all about carriage. So keep your head high and you’re sure to make an impression.

Cannes Film Festival 2017 Day 1 & 2 Looks

Cannes is a star-studded event with A-listers from all across the globe. But apart from the great movie unveils the festival has become popular for its red carpet looks. Each year we see the A-listers bringing their top game when it comes to their red carpet looks. Some end up being ridiculed by the twitteraties and the fashion Nazis where are some ace the game with their glamorous looks. So step into the fashion world of Cannes Film Festival 2017 with me and check out the best-dressed celebrities so far:

Deepika Padukone
The new brand ambassador of the L’oreal is definitely turning heads on the red carpet. The jewel toned maroon dress by Marchesa has her looking like a diva. She paired the outfit with Jimmy Choo stilettos, studded danglers and ring from the studio of De Grisogono and her killer smile.

Aishwarya Rai
She stole the spotlight on the red carpet with her Disney Princess gown by Michael Cinco. The icy blue off-shoulder dress had delicate embroidery all over. She let the ball-worthy gown shine by keeping her accessories to a bare minimum and opting for a pin-straight hairdo. She has been a frequent head turner at the Cannes Film Festival. This time I think she has outdone herself.

Elle Fanning
The princess-inspired gowns are raging over the red carpet this year. Elle Fanning sported a princess style gown by Vivienne Westwood at the Cannes Film Festival this year. She has a hand painted unicorn on her dress train which makes the dress even more enchanting and drool worthy.

Uma Thurman

Uma was dressed to kill in a bardot styled pink gown by Atelier Versace. The dressed showcased a plunging neckline and a sizzling thigh high slit. She pulled off this racy outfit with immense confidence and panache. If looks could kill then we all would be her victim.

Petra Nemcova
Plunging neckline and thigh-high slits have been popular this year on the red carpet. But carrying off both together in one outfit can be tricky. But Petra Nemcova makes a daring fashion statement with her bold neckline and risqué thigh high slit. She pulled up her hair in a sleek high ponytail to show off her statement necklace and earrings which was the icing on the cake.

So far the Cannes journey has been nothing short of glamorous and hasn’t failed to disappoint me. I am eagerly waiting to some more jaw-dropping looks on the red carpet this year.

Katrina Kaif Makes her Debut at the Cannes Film Festival 2015

Another Indian diva was added to the list of invitees at the International annual Cannes Film Festival. Stunning Bollywood A-lister Katrina Kaif attended the events of May 13 and May 14 as brand ambassador of L’Oreal Paris. Yes, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor have more company now!

Katrina had the shutter-bugs in a fine frenzy, though it’s not very clear whether for the right or wrong reasons. Both her Red Carpet outfits have received mixed reviews, so let’s have a look at what she wore before we decide whether her first appearance was a hit or miss.

On the opening night of the Cannes Film Festival, Katrina Kaif donned an off-shoulder, black and ivory Oscar de la Renta gown for the premiere of La Tete Haute. A masterpiece of intricate lace work and detailing, the dress was from the designer’s Fall 2015 collection. The actress accessorized it with beautiful dangers and a matching bracelet, leaving her neck bare. Her makeup reflected an attempted at a sultry, sun-kissed look, with oodles of bronzer covering her naturally fair skin. Also, her hair was colored burgundy and arranged in an almost retro-inspired, wavy side sweep.

The fashion police has not been appreciative of Katrina’s debut look. International press has gone as far as to label it as a “Red-Carpet-Dont’s” example. While the dress in itself is undeniably lovely, it is perhaps the makeup and hair that hampered its appeal. The faux-dusky complexion contrasted badly with her burgundy locks and she looked slightly washed out with the nude lip color. But all is not lost. Top marks to Katrina on selecting a gorgeous dress, even if she didn’t get the overall look quite right. Maybe next time?

Now to Katrina’s second Red Carpet appearance, which was at the premiere of Mad Max: Fury Road. She was seen in a scarlet red Elie Saab gown and sky high, eight inch heels. Accentuating her curvy figure, this high-necked dress with a cinched waist had fine floral motifs adding a dose of chic glamour. Katrina kept the makeup minimal and hair simply parted in the center. Black nail polish and deep red lips completed her elegantly styled ensemble.

Many fashion reviews, especially those produced by Indian magazines, have found this to be a good outfit – it is contemporary, classy and wonderful. But many have also pointed out that it was a “safe choice” and “utterly forgettable”. Moreover, the burgundy hair, which Katrina has dyed so for her upcoming movie Fitoor, clashed with the red of the dress, making her appear a little too fiery in an already red background.

So, let’s put it this way – Katrina’s first stint at Cannes was no roaring success. But, fortunately, it wasn’t a complete disaster either. True to her usual style, she played it comfy and safe. In fact, her most impressive outfits were those she wore for press functions and interviews off-the-red carpet. Have a look.

Well, not too good, not too bad. This is all we can say. Hopefully, she’ll surprise us with something more wondrous at her next Cannes appearance.
