The humble jean jacket was a wardrobe staple in the ‘80s and the 90s, and has now made a comeback in a very big way. With our favourite fashion icons such as Gigi Hadid, Selena Gomez, and Rihanna rocking the jean jacket, new wardrobe goals are set and we must stock up on such denim goodness asap!
Like most fashion trends that make a comeback, the good old jean jacket is now available in a host of new avatars. There are numerous ways to sport the trend, depending on your personal style. But if you’re new to it, you may want to start out with the classic full-sleeved jean jacket. It is perhaps the easiest to style, given its inherent minimalism. You can wear it with jeans, skirts, shorts, and even dresses.

One of my oft-worn look with jean-jackets is a denim-on-denim ensemble. The trick to style such an outfit successfully is playing around with colours, wash, and detailing, to add depth to the look. As you can see in the picture below, I’ve teamed a light jean-jacket with deep blue ripped jeans and a fuchsia top. The variance in the top and bottom denim fabric adds balance to the ensemble and prevents the outfit from looking too unidimensional.
I also love sleeveless denim jackets which can jazz up summer outfits in such a charming way. Simply put one on over a dichromatic ensemble like I have, and it’ll add much oomph to a simple outfit. As you may notice, there’s something rather youthful about sleeveless jean jackets – they can have you looking many years younger if styled intelligently.

But if you are more experimental and have a penchant for the eclectic, try teaming up a jean jacket with a dress. You can see that I’ve paired a full-sleeved, loosely-fitted jacket with black dress that has gold detailing. Bright, funky earrings and flat boots complete the outfit. The combination of the feminine, flowy dress with the rugged jacket and boots creates an interesting look that is bold and striking. Such an ensemble is ideal for a picnic or casual day outing. If you have an embellished jacket, you can even consider the dress-and-jean-jacket look for a night-out or small party.

In conclusion, my only advice is that when it comes to jean jackets, don’t be afraid to play around with different looks. They are wonderfully versatile and will be a staple in your closet soon enough. So go grab some, and start experimenting!
