Miuniku AW16 – London Fashion Week Review

I came across another designer label that I had previously been unfamiliar with, and guess what? It’s founded by two sisters from India who were born and brought up in Mumbai! Miuniku is the brainchild of Tina and Nikita Sutradhar, and their collection was showcased at the Elms Lesters Painting Room during the London Fashion Week 2016.Miuniku London Fashion Week 2I was mighty impressed on seeing their work and decided to dig a little deeper. The Sutradhar sisters graduated from the London College of Fashion in June 2013, where they were awarded two prestigious awards – the Fashion Innovation Award and the ISKO™ Denim Diffusion Award – for their womens wear collection. Their creations also had them poised as semi-finalists at the H&M Design Awards 2014 and winners of a Special Jury Prize at the LVMH Prize for Young Fashion Designers 2014. And look where they are today – with their apparel being showcased at the LFS 2016! What a journey.Miuniku London Fashion WeekAs far as their Autumn/Fall collection is concerned, it was themed upon the spirit of exploration. The Miuniku collection was inspired by the notion of explorers’ diagrams and eye for organic details. Geological patterns and motifs such as waves, mountains and uneven lines of sediments and rocks were incorporated into their designs. In keeping with their fascination with everything earthy, Tina and Nikita used primary and dark hues in shades drawn from nature. With an eye to make their clothing functionally appropriate for the quintessential explorer, the collection had a sporty vibe and much utilitarian value. Clean lines, paired with both minimal and maximal elements, created an interesting, wearable wardrobe that any adventurous girl would love to have.

This collection made me proud for it brought two young, talented Indian girls much-deserved international attention. I liked their work a lot.

Omer Asim AW16 – London Fashion Week

Trained in architecture from The Bartlett School of Architecture, London, Omer Asim is a designer with a truly unique aesthetic. The man is an explorer who consistently pushes the envelope by de constructing and reinterpreting the shapes and silhouettes that are found in modern fashion and design.Omer Asim (2) His Autumn/Winter 2016 collection presentation was held at the Elms Lesters Painting Rooms in Soho and there is only one word to describe the venue, the collection and the ambience: striking.

The collection explores the concept of contrast and balance – masculine and feminine, black and white, leather and silk, wool and wood, et al. Omer Asim remained true to his contemporary aesthetic, clean lines and architectural silhouettes, with a muted minimal colour palette and unique textures, coupled with intricate details. In his exploration of contrast, Omer Asim created many unexpected combinations – for example, pairing a structured, asymmetric top with a feminine mid-length skirt.Omer AsimAs always, the minimalism of every piece allowed the sheer quality of the craft to shine through, and it was evident that every single piece in this collection was tailored with utmost care and attentiveness. The attention to detail stretched to the hair and makeup as well, which was carefully chosen to create the illusion that the models were ethereal statues rather than human.

It was simply mind-blowing but of course, we wouldn’t expect anything less from this talented designer.

Minki Cheng’s AW16 – London Fashion Week Review

Another update on the ongoings at the London Fashion Week, here’s a post on an up and coming designer whose roots lie in Hong Kong. Minki Cheng spent his childhood years there but soon moved to London to pursue a career in design. Having seen his collection, I feel that his childhood, spent in the colourful, eclectic environs of Hong Kong, continues to influence his style mantra – and that’s what made his creations distinctive and striking.minki cheng london fashion week 4Minki Cheng’s primary inspiration was the retro entertainment of his youth and thus featured elements such as anime robots, caricatured warriors and other unearthly motifs. In keeping with his typical style, the colours he used were very vibrant – full of metallic shades and neons – reminding me of disco balls in retro clubs. Oversized jackets, frayed ribboning and frills, dramatic silhouettes and monochromatic, patterned apparels graced his ramp. What I loved about his collection is its attempt to redefine and revaluate the fashion sensibilities of the Modern Woman. Straying away from the path of tried and tested hits, Minki Cheng’s designs challenged the boundaries of regular-wear outfits with much aplomb.minki cheng london fashion week 7This was actually the guiding principle of Cheng’s design philosophy – to create edgy apparel that matched the non-conformist tendencies of bold, beautiful women. I think he succeeded in executing his vision for I have to say, his designs, though quite experimental, were suitably alluring to make one want them for oneself. I certainly wanted to take many of his creations home. That may not have been possible but I was happy enough to feast my eyes on them too!minki cheng london fashion week 6

Georgia Hardinge’s AW16 – London Fashion Week Review

I’ve had such a great time attending numerous events and some designer displays at London Fashion Week have left me so mesmerized, I feel compelled to write about them.

Georgia Hardinge is one of those, whose Autumn/Winter collection “Hidden” created quite a buzz. She learned design at the Parons School of Art and Design in Paris where she was awarded the Best Designer Award for her graduate collection, thus catapulting her into the limelight. She then received a BFS Contemporary Scholarship by the British Fashion Council for 2014-15 and having seen her work now, I completely understand why!GEORGIA HARDINGE Georgia Hardinge’s “Hidden” is inspired by last year’s meteor showers, and attempted to capture the mysterious nature of the universe in her designs. She experimented with lenticular techniques so that stunning illusions and angular revelations gave an intriguing edge to her clothes. Her showcase, which had both a traditional catwalk presentation and a walk-by display of models, was so full of surprises for me. The ramp models paraded outfits very clearly inspired by shooting stars having simple silhouettes in midnight hues of blue, magenta and ivory. For the display that was off the ramp, models clad in her creations stood in between holographic slats with gelled baby hair and French plaits, adding to the inventive vibe.GEORGIA HARDINGE-2What I loved about Hardinge’s “Hidden” is the structural innovativeness, which I suspect comes from her deep fascination with architecture and sculpture. Seeing her collection was like watching a magic show – different angles exposed different fabrics, designs and colours, making each garment extremely striking and unique. This avant garde sense of aesthetics and design is really what experimental fashion is all about. And don’t get me wrong, most of her pieces are highly wearable as well – something you could easily sport on a date or an evening out, I am definitely getting my hands on it soon. This combination of conceptual newness and conventional stylistics made “Hidden” one of my favourite collections from the London Fashion Week.GEORGIA HARDINGE-3I seriously maintain that you had to be there to understand the brilliance of it, but I hope my second-hand account has aroused your interest as well. Stay tuned for more updates from my LFW 2016 visit!

Edeline Lee AW16 – London Fashion Week Review

In a world that is becoming more complicated and fast paced with each passing day, trends that allow one to simplify their life are becoming increasingly popular – think decluttering (Marie Kondo, anyone?), clean eating, raw diets, digital detoxes et al. Edeline Lee Autumn Winter 2016 was born from this very idea of returning to simplicity, of underexposing and of minimising in every aspect of life, including fashion.

Edeline Lee London Fashion Week 4 To drive the point of simplicity home, Edeline made use of pure shapes, clean lines and classic fabrics, resulting in a markedly minimalist collection that exudes warmth and comfort. The silhouettes were mostly relaxed and flowing – oversized overcoats, slouchy pockets and beautiful sweater dresses – but became more fitted in glamorous pieces like printed dresses, gowns and skinny trousers.  Edeline Lee London Fashion Week 2 Cream was the most prominent colour in the collection, and was paired with black piping to create effortlessly elegant pieces, while occasional flashes of bold red and deep green infused some colour into the collection in a very understated way.

The presentation took place at the On|Off space at The Vinyl Factory on the first day of London Fashion Week and the atmosphere was absolutely electric. Like the collection, the set-up was simple yet edgy – a classic black and white tiled flooring, accessorized with large piles of shredded tissue paper in multiple colours. What a great way to kick off the week!  Edeline Lee London Fashion WeekIn just a few short years, Edeline Lee, a graduate from Central Saint Martins and an apprentice with both Alexander McQueen and John Galliano, amongst others, has managed to show the world that she is here to stay. She is known for designing for the woman of tomorrow – is it any wonder that she has been worn by the likes of Taylor Swift or Solage Knowles?Edeline Lee London Fashion Week 3

Sid Neigum AW16- London Fashion Week Review

Hello Again!

With this post, I bring to you another one of the wonderful finds from the London Fashion Week 2016. I was unfamiliar with Toronto-based designer Sid Neigum’s work so far. But on seeing his collection that he himself described as “maximal and minimal”, I realized I had really been missing out on something.Sid Neigum london fashion week 2016-2From what I’ve heard, Sid Neigum approaches apparel design with the precision and aesthetic sense of a mathematician. His clothes attempt to find the golden ratio in design, thus emphasizing the nuances of body structure, silhouette and colours. The Fall/Winter collection he showcased here comprised of modern cuts and fabrics, fashioning clothes in both structured and relaxed designs. He used a variety of interesting fabrics including wool, 100 % camel hair, polyurethane and even synthetic blends comprising of 28% metal. Trust me when I say this, seeing his collection was fascinating yet soothing to the eyes. I guess, when someone combines mathematic acumen with a refined design capability, wonderful clothing is created.Sid Neigum london fashion week 2016What I loved about Neigum’s collection is that the clothes were in the foreground and the sole centre of attention. The models were wearing nude makeup and simple messy buns, and this minimalism ensured you focused on the apparel and nothing else. As far as the clothes go, I can only describe them as chic with an ostensibly contemporary aesthetic. They are the kind of clothes one wouldn’t think twice about wearing on the street. And there’s something about such wearable clothing that I always find to be very impressive. If you can wear what you saw on the ramp off it too, the designer is doing something right!

So Sid Neigum’s collection was the surprise revelation at the London Fashion Week 2016 for me. Rest assured, I will be following his work closely from now on! How did you like his collection?

Danielle Romeril AW16- London Fashion Week Review

Music has the power to make or break a fashion show, as those who attended the Danielle Romeril Autumn/Winter 2016 Presentation would agree. From classic tracks like Golden Brown by The Stranglers to the eclectic hip-hop beats of French music producer Onra, the carefully curated tunes were truly a key highlight. Held on the third day of London Fashion Week at the prestigious Chelsea College of Arts, the presentation was incredibly quirky and especially fun to attend, with an interesting layout, stunning garments and of course, good music.Danielle Romeril-london fashion week - aw16Danielle Romeril cited vast and varied influences for this collection – from Isabel de Valois, a consort to King Philip II of Spain, to the graphic stripes found on cycling jerseys; from the free-spirited vibes of Studio Paradiso, a cult Dutch nightclub, to classic football scarves that were all the rage in the nineties. These assorted influences came together to form a collection that is markedly inspired by historical fashion, period costume and traditional textures, with sporty touches in details like stripes, drawstrings, graphic zips and parkas. Add a subtle futuristic flavour with the occasional psychedelic print and there you have it – a collection that is really, really exciting.Danielle Romeril-london fashion week - aw16-2The wide array of colours, the beautiful synergy between different textures, the play on proportion and the statement cut-outs found on many of the pieces in the collection where definitely stand out features. The finishing touches were the icing on the cake – black graphic lines painted on the models’ faces for makeup and grungy Dr. Martens worn with conventional socks for the right amount of oomph.

To my mind, this collection hit the sweet spot between the beauty of well-crafted pieces and the edginess that Danielle Romeril is known for. She has definitely marked herself as a force to be reckoned with in the new-age London fashion scene.

Different Types of Boots in Trend – What’s Your Pick?

Boots are a winter wardrobe essential and today, there are just so many varieties out there! These days, they are not just a fashion statement but also a reflection of one’s personal style. So which kind of boot is your favourite?

Boots-in-Trend

I like almost all kinds of boots. Ankle Boots are practical and very versatile; a great choice to pair with both casual and dressy outfits. When I want to amp up the glamour quotient however, I go in for Knee-High Boots. They look great with short dresses or skirts so you can wear them when dressing up for a date or outing. Off late, these classic long boots have often been remodelled as Over-the-Knee Boots, though sadly, I don’t own such a pair as yet. They have joined the high-fashion bandwagon as a wonderful way to look great and stay warm. Maybe I’ll buy a pair soon!

Leaving aside my future shopping plans, another one of my favourite styles is the Peep-Toe Boots. This cross between peep-toe heels and regular boots has made them all the rage since Winter 2014. They are great for occasions when you’re all about style and not about the weather; open from the front, Peep-Toe Boots don’t really shield you from the chill completely but do offer some protection! But they certainly look fabulous and go very well with shorts and skinny jeans.

I also own a pair of the ankle boots, which is one of the most versatile pair I have, I have worn it with dresses, shorts, jeans. This one style should always be in your wardrobe and I promise you it will never go out of style ever for you.

Finally, on those days that my Bohemian side is out to shine, I usually pick up a pair of tasselled boots. They look great with kaftans, ripped jeans and fusion outfits even. But oh my! I could go on and on about my love for boots, quoting style-after-style that appeals to me. But the question is, what style is your favourite? I’d love to know so don’t hesitate to share!

Olverum Bath Oil Review

This post is especially for those glam girls out there who are always on their toes. Let’s face it, we are all super-stressed out with a million things to do, not enough time and of course, an innate desire to look our best. So sometimes, we are in desperate need of a breather and want to unwind in absolute luxury.olverum oil 2

If you can identify with this feeling, let me introduce you to this wonder-product called Olverum Bath Oil. This is a therapeutic oil which contains 10 pure essential oils, blended to perfection. It is highly concentrated, thus providing a strong fragrance with the smallest quantity. In terms of its restorative benefits, it will help you get a good night’s sleep, sooth sore and aching muscles and even ease a cold or flu.

If you live in the UK, you’ve probably heard a lot about this Olverum Bath Oil, if not used it. It enjoys a sort of cult following here though it has now been re-packaged under new British ownership. But don’t worry, the amazing formulation remains unchanged, and its’ almost century-long popularity has not been affected. And I totally understand why this is such a hit, especially with women. Its ability to soothe one’s tired senses is simply divine, and well, I am a very big fan now.

I first used Olverum when I was sent the sample with instructions that only 5 ml would suffice for one bath. And I was pretty excited to try it out. You see, I’m a busy Mom, with much office work, lots to do at home, and also this blog. So bath time is me-time for me. Long, luxurious baths on the weekend help me relieve week-long fatigue and muscle stress from the gym. So when I got the oil, I decided to test them asap and what I pleasure it was!

olverum Oil

I took the bottle thinking, just in case needed I would put more in, but Oh My Word! Only 5ml was more than enough. The moment I popped one cap full into the water, the wonderful aroma spread all over the place and immediately delighted me. So trust me when I say that 5 ml of Olverum is all you need for that perfect bath, which is quite rare with such products; in my experience, anything less than 1.5-2 times the recommended quantity usually isn’t sufficient for me personally. And the best part is, Olverum’s fragrance is strong yet exquisite, with a unisex appeal that’ll leave anyone feeling absolutely refreshed!

My final take on Olverum Bath Oil thus is that it’s truly brilliant. It delivers what it promises and leaves me relaxed and rejuvenated in a matter of minutes. It’s a must-have product for all those tired mums out there. Indulge in some home-therapy with this bath oil and you’ll enjoy the wonders of a stress-free mind and deep, deep sleep.

PS: I am going to buy a big bottle the moment I run out of my sample – that’s how much I loved it!

Cost: You can get 125ml for £26.00 and will be enough for 25 baths,  and the 250ml for £48 and enough for 50 baths.

Neerja Movie Review: Special Screening in London

I had the fortunate opportunity to watch this movie at a Special Screening today at Twentieth Century Fox Studios in Soho.

About Neerja Movie: Neerja is a cinematic representation of the events that unfolded on 5th Sep 1986, when Pan AM flight 73 from Bombay to New York was hijacked in transit at Karachi airport in Paskistan. The movie is a story of a the head purser Neerja Bhanot, a 22 year old part time model, who took the risk of her life to save the passengers after the hijack and was fatally injured while trying to save the life of 3 children on flight and help them escape.

neerja

My Reviews after watching the movie:

I think the movie is very well made, its fast paced to keep your attention all the time. The presentation of the movie is excellent and it makes you believe every single part that has been represented. Not a regular commercial Bollywood movie with lots of song and dance which I love equally. The film shows the hijack drama in all detail. It also shows the preparation of the Palestinian terrorists before they hijack the PanAm aircraft. Snatches from Neerja’s life mostly come in flashbacks when she is putting up a brave fight against the armed terrorists, in a bid to save the lives of her passengers, many of whom are children, women and old people. The film keeps you on the edge of your seat and the climax will just leave you teary-eyed.

Neerja Bhanot was born in 1963 in Chandigarh, India to Rama Bhanot and Harish Bhanot, a Mumbai-based journalist and became the youngest recipient of India’s highest peacetime military award for bravery, the Ashok Chakra. Before becoming a air hostess, Neerja was a well known model too.

sonam-kapoor-neerja-759

Sonam Kapoor is excellent and brilliant in her role as Neerja, I think am sure this is her best performance till date, she is the lead star of the film and owns the character completely and is thoroughly convincing as Neerja Bhanot. All I can say is that finally Sonam Kapoor has arrived and due credit goes to Ram Madhvani for bringing out the best in her.

Shabana Azmi is mind-blowing! She makes every single in which she appears, memorable and her end speech makes the audience cry buckets with a great performance. On the whole, Neerja is a must watch and going to be a big hit. It is a human drama which will move the audience to tears a number of times.

Note: Neerja is produced by Fox Star Studios and co-produced by Bling Unplugged, and has been directed by celebrated ad film director, Ram Madhvani.

OOTD: Trend Alert, Rocking the Sleeveless Jacket

Hi All!

It’s been a while since I’ve given you a peek into my wardrobe essentials for this season. So I decided to put up an Outfit post where you can see what my favourite look is these days.

Sleeveless Jacket-4

Off late, I have been very partial to sleeveless jackets. This is the latest trend to hit the work-wear section and boy, am I loving it or what! I think these lovely tailored jackets are effortlessly trendy and can make even a simple outfit look like million bucks. With just one simple add on to your regular office outfit, you can reinvent and create new looks. The versatility of sleeveless jackets is sure to have them topping the fashion charts for a while.

Sleeveless Jacket-3

If you’re slightly unsure of how to carry off a sleeveless jacket, here is some inspiration. I have styled my work-wear outfit donning a neutral-hued sleeveless jacket over a simple, black trouser. I’ve put on a black pullover underneath to highlight the jacket and teamed them with classic black pencil heels.

Sleeveless Jacket-2

While the point was to extol the sleeveless jacket here, on a side note, I have to say – I personally think we should all have at least one pair of perfectly fitted black trousers, an elegant black knit /shirt and some beautiful black heels in our wardrobes for sure. In fact, I have 4 black bottoms and 5-6 different style black tops, just for office-wear!

Sleeveless Jacket

That aside, I hope you like my Outfit post and fall in love with long, sleeveless jackets the way that I have! How do you feel about them? Share your opinion – I’d love to hear from you!

My Favourite Looks From the Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week Spring 2016

It’s that time of the year again when the fashion world is abuzz with activity. There’s an exciting line-up of Fashion Shows in store for us, kick-started by the Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week Spring 2016.

Haute-Couture-Week-2016

And what a week it was! The most exclusive fashion brands showcased their Spring collections’ in the sartorially-charged environs of beautiful Paris. The events were held from January 24 – 29 and the who’s-who of the fashion world were there to attend them all. I followed all the news from the Paris Haute Couture Week 2016 very closely, because, well, I just couldn’t stay away from the glitz and glamour!

The collections of fashion giants like Chanel, Dior, Armani and Versace made quite an impression as usual. Their clothes were dramatic, striking and typically OTT, making a bold, beautiful statement with much panache. Jean Paul Gaultier’s display also garnered much attention with its emphasis on flashy, hippy styles of retro nightclubbing.

But my favourites were the collections by Valentino, Viktor & Rolf and Elie Saab. They stood out above the rest and left a lasting impression on their audiences. Valentino’s line reinvented 20th-century Venetian-pagan romanticism in some fabulous apparel, catering to modern fashion sensibilities and lovers of classics alike. Most of their outfits were floor-length pieces embellished with sequins, velvet-detailing and sheer bodices in warm, royal hues.

While Valentino achieved a fine balance of classicism and novelty, Viktor & Rolf remained true to their avant gardeism and captivated the audience with their outrageous clothing. Heaving influenced by Cubist artistry, they presented an interesting spin on conventional styles, using 3D construction and stunning pattern-work. One may doubt the wearability of this collection, but its brilliant conceptualization is simply undeniable.

I have to say though, even as I enjoy the occasional wacky collection, I have a weakness for uber-feminine, delicate styles. Naturally, my favourite collection from the entire show was the magnificent line by Elie Saab. Oh, I could go on and on about his “Enter India” collection and still feel I didn’t do it justice. Saab admitted to being inspired by the notion of a 19th century Englishwoman on a trip to India. His line up featured unique accessories such as lace-up combat boots, sequined Wellies, studded creepers and elaborate belt bags. There were also some exquisite beaded dresses with above-the-ankle hemlines. But the opulent floor-length gowns are what stole the show. In metallic shades with exquisite embroidery and glittery embellishments, these gowns combined the elementary lines of western clothing with the royal splendour of Indian lehengas. I love fusion styles, so naturally, my favourite piece was an ivory-golden gown with a flowy, head-covering train.

In the end, I can only say that I thoroughly enjoyed this Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week. I believe that this brilliant start is a precursor to the wonderful fashion output 2016 is to bring to us. And these were just my favourites – I love to hear from you about what you loved from this show too!

7 Styling Tips Men Can Use to Impress Their Partners

Hi All,

Here are the excerpts of my article on India.com http://www.india.com/top-n/7-styling-tips-men-can-use-to-impress-their-partners-this-valentines-day-932794/

While we know the staples, wearing formals to impress the woman, there’s a lot more beyond just putting on a shirt, coat and tie. Women love their men to be dressed well and a smartly-dressed man impresses her staright-away. So while you’re sure she loves you in your baggy jeans and tees the rest of the days, the one day when you do make an attempt for her, it is sure to stand out. Now, don’t stand scratching your head in front of the wardrobe.
men-style
1. Clean cut basics and earthy tones

Go for smart yet understated style, with lightweight outerwear, clean cut basics and earthy tones. Once you have got the key pieces, this look is all about how you wear it. Avoid garish or over-the-top jarring tones. While V-Day is all about reds and pinks, leave them to the girls.

men-style-2

2. Back to Blue

Pick a shade, any shade, as long as it’s blue. Blue is in trend in this Valentine season and looks great on just about anyone with any body type. Consider knitwear and denim as your outfit’s building blocks and keep the rest of the accessories elegant yet simple. Choose a shade of blue to complement your build and skin-tone.

men-style-3

3. Chinos

Whether or not you’re joining the wide-legged trouser brigade, straight-leg or tapered chinos are arguably the single most versatile weapon in styling. You can wear them with a crew neck tee or polo shirt or even a short-sleeved shirt and lightweight jacket.

men-style-5

4. Casual Styles

Headed towards tropical temperatures and lively cities, this trend is all about easy textures and a tailored but relaxed approach to getting dressed. Focus on slick suede and low key prints to impress your valentine.

5. Sleeveless Jackets

Oh My word, men look so good in a sleeveless jacket, be it formal or casual. I think sleeveless jackets are a must in a man’s wardrobe especially for those romantic dates and can make anyone look uber-chic.

6. Statement Watch

Whether it is a digital one to keep you all updated or a traditional timepiece you prefer to sport, don’t forget this accessory which is an absolute classic in men’s fashion and would make you stand out with the right pick on this Valentine’s Day.

7. Accessory: Headgear alert

You have many options to choose from when it comes to a hat or cap, depending on your outfit. The ones in trends these days are fedoras, flat caps or newsboy styles. Baseball caps are a great choice for a casual date.

In Conversation with Zita Elze – Floral Artist Designer

A few days back, I received a gift in my mail that was wonderfully wrapped. It got me thinking about how important design and decoration is to the art of presenting anything. For instance, when I attend fashion shows and designer displays, I tend to get mesmerized by the interiors of the venue and how they have been styled. And why not? Interior decoration is an art unto itself, and when I spoke with Zita Elze, a leading floral artist and design consultant, my fascination with her work increased manifold.

Zita-Elze-1

I had first been exposed to Zita Elze’s work at the Aashni and Co. Wedding Show in Dorchester last month, where she had been responsible for the interior theme decoration. I remember how exquisitely she had styled the venue interiors, bringing surreal beauty to life with the enchanted woodland theme.

Destiny is a strange thing though. Like many highly accomplished artists, Zita got into the field of floral interior decoration just by chance. She hadn’t planned on this as a professional pursuit but was greatly inspired on visiting London some 25 years back, when she came across Maids of Honor, a historical Tea House, close to Kew Gardens. She smiles as she remembers thinking how wonderful it would be to work and live in this beautiful place and city. And that’s where the seeds of her decoration dreams were sown. It’s only fitting that when she came back to London almost 10 years later, she visited the Kew again, fell in love an empty florist shop and simply couldn’t resist what destiny was offering!

ZIta Elze 3Today, Zita is an internationally acclaimed floral decorator, interior designer and design consultant. Ask her how she achieved so much in such little time and she gives partial credit to her formal education, including a full course in interior design and another in garden design as well as an intensive course in floristry techniques. It is this solid foundation that her natural talent and creativity surmount, allowing her to produce her enthralling masterpieces.

I came to realize though, the journey couldn’t have been easy. Zita admits that when she first took up interior designing seriously, it was all rather tough and demanding. She worked hard, put in long hours and invested mind, body and soul in making her enterprise a success. 15 years down the line, all that hard work is starting to pay off. She is now more settled and relaxed, with less taxing schedules and the privilege of being more selective about the work she undertakes.

Zita-Elze-3“What inspires you?”, I ask and she thinks for a while before answering. She then confesses that being a keen observer has always bolstered her capabilities. She lived in many places including Paris, Germany, Italy and other unique cities and has travelled far and wide across the world. Her exposure to numerous cultures and their art-and-design sensibilities has contributed to the formulation of her own unique style. Her work reflects a nuanced understanding of human nature, art and beauty. “Inspiration is everywhere”, she says, “All around us. You just have to seek and harness it intelligently, and that comes to me instinctively.” Clearly, Zita doesn’t struggle with ideation or creative exhaustion much; her struggles are of a different kind.

Zita-Elze-4

Her biggest problem is finding talented and dedicated staff to work with, which isn’t always easy. Maybe that’s what motivated her to start a design academy where she conducts numerous courses in floral design, of different durations and requisite skill levels. She likes to give students individual attention and thus classes are small. But her protégés look forward to her masterclasses very eagerly, and that convinces her that she is doing something right.

Zita Elze 5

I laugh as she says this for this is something of an understatement. She’s not “doing something right”; she is excelling in her field and getting international recognition for it. Apart from high-brow fashion and corporate functions, she has also undertaken decoration for public events such as the White Gallery Catwalk Show, Chelsea Flower Show, British Flowers Week, Music on Fire festivals, the Lord Mayor’s Big Curry Lunch and more. She has even designed the sets for mini-TV series Great Expectations. And when your work’s on TV, you know you’ve made your mark for sure.

Zita-Elze

Client reviews reveal that Zita’s ability to create something unique each time is what draws them to her. She understands their needs and delivers accordingly, combining their requirements with her imaginative genius. What I find to be most striking about her work is an aura of fragility about her designs, as if they are too beautiful to be true – you don’t want to shatter the illusion. My personal favourite is her Living Embroidery collection of elaborate gowns that are adorned with fresh flowers, berries and other natural materials. These matchless dresses are right out of a fairytale, such is their enchanting quality. You too can have a look at her work for a visual treat of epic proportions. But I’ll have you know, the pictures don’t do justice to her fab creations – seeing them live is the real thing!

A Chat With Maral Yazarloo

maral yazarloo
These days, I find myself coming across these wonderful, talented people from the fashion industry and am amazed at just how highly accomplished they are. I recently interviewed Maral Yazarloo, an upcoming designer of Iranian origin, who has now set shop in India, having fallen in love with the country. I first saw her collection at the Fashion Scout Show, London, in September 2015 and couldn’t help but gush over her how lovely and distinctive it was.

Fashion-Scout-London-Maral-Yazarloo(Snippets of Maral’s Fashion Showcase at London Fashion Week SS16 2016- Fashion Scout Event)

When I got the opportunity to chat with her, I was impressed at how multifaceted Maral’s personality and life is! Though she is now very passionately involved in the fashion industry, that’s far from what she was academically trained to do. She first came to India to do her MBA from Pune and now has a PhD in marketing as well. Aside from managing her fashion brand, she is currently also the head of marketing for a realty company called Panchshil.

So, you’re probably wondering how she ended up having an exclusive fashion store in Pune? It doesn’t seem to fit in, does it? Well, even though she was academically pursuing business studies, she had a keen interest in fashion, right from when she was a little girl. She laughs as she remembers how she always had an opinion on what she would wear, often designing her own clothes so they were completely unique. That little girl’s fashion sensitivity led the young Maral to finally take up fashion seriously; she signed up for a design course at IED, Milan, following which, she began her experiments in fashion with a team of just two other people in Pune.

Once Maral started designing her own line, it was sheer hard-work and uncompromising determination that led her to where she is today. Just think about it; she created a whopping 600+ designs before launching in Paris! I think there couldn’t have been a better reward than to be debuting internationally in the world’s fashion Mecca. She has also showcased her collection in Rome and London ever since, and is now gearing up for a show in Dubai on February 6.

While this long list of achievements in such a short span of time is certainly commendable, it is her slightly-bohemian, very adventurous take on life that fascinates me. Ask her to describe herself and she says “Being an avid traveller and having visited over 60 countries, I am tough and adventurous by nature and this justifies my hobbies like biking, karate, bag-packing! I am a frank person by nature who loves children, enjoys visiting new places and I make memories wherever I go!”  What she didn’t mention here is that she excels at her hobbies too! She holds the record for Harley Davidson Lady Rider in India and was also the first lady owner of BMW and Ducati here. I mean, I’m forced to ask, does Maral also moonlight as Wonder Woman?

Maral is a dedicated person who believes in hard work and following her passion, while designing beautiful clothes. One major portion of her work that requires much personal attention is the unique custom clothing made for Indian brides. These one-of-a-kind pieces she designs are truly stunning. When I saw her work at the Fashion Scout Show, the brilliant colours and exquisite thread-work, really had me going gaga. As I mention this to her, she admits that the vibrancy in her designs comes from a fusion of Asian, Middle-Eastern and Western styles. She borrows the western notion of cuts, designs and silhouettes and brings them to life using fabrics and hues from Iran, India and Turkmenistan. No wonder her pieces are so unique!

Today, Maral has an extensive range of clothing with a variety of styles. She even has a range for women bikers who can enjoy their city travels in chic, comfy clothing from her collection. My personal favourite is her fusion line; the clothes are so striking yet elegant, you could wear them almost anywhere. The bridal lehengas she makes are also spectacular, with lovely detailing using pearls, Swarovski or Zari work. Here’s the full list of her current collections:

Needless to say, I am mighty impressed with Maral’s fashion journey. She mentioned that she will be soon embarking on a long bike ride from India to Alaska to experience different cultures and get inspiration for her new pieces. I can’t wait to see what wonderful designs this adventure trip inspires!

Ten Tips for Your Dream Dressing room

We all have a vision of that perfect place called our dressing room, adorned in colours of white and pink. My perfect dressing room will have lots of hearts and flowers in it and also fairy lights.

Now you must be think, why I am talking about dressing rooms, well that is because currently I am drawing up a mood board while I’m figuring out the wardrobe design for the dressing room I would like to have very soon. Promise to post the pics as soon as it is done 😉  While doing so, a thought came to my mind that even as we’d all like to live in mansions and mod houses and have a few rooms just for our clothing that may not always be the case. Houses are getting smaller every day and wardrobe design is now all about how best to use limited space instead of being extravagant in terms of size.

So, here is a list of 10 tips to help you all get that dream dressing room, possibly in a more compact space.

  • Lights – Make sure your wardrobe or drawers have enough light around so that you can see what is hidden in those dark corners.
  • Separators – All of us would love to have a dressing room of our room. But what might work best is a folding screen that you can use as a separator in order to create a dressing area. Such wardrobe design would strike on a very old Hollywood note too.
  • Trays – Use beautiful trays to neatly organise your accessories, makeup and perfumes on your vanity table or bathroom shelves.
  • Dress up your closet – Use bright paint or wallpapers to dress up your closet and give it a cheerful vibe. If your wardrobe is small, use light colors to create a sense of space. In this situation, less is more, so restrict your creativity to maybe just one wall.
  • Keep your space clean – An organized wardrobe and dressing space will do wonders for your physical appearance and how you dress up. Thus, make sure your space is always organised and things that you are not using for a season are tucked away in your storage area so that you have space available for seasonal clothes.
  • Sliding doors – If you are tight on space, choose sliding doors over swinging ones. This way, opening the closet won’t require much space.
  • Shelving System – This method is your best friend in terms of organising shoes, small clothes and knick–knacks. Invest in a decent shelving system so that your clothes are properly sorted within your wardrobe as well.
  • Labelling – Use labels on boxes so that you are aware of what is tucked in which box and finding something isn’t a struggle.
  • Folding Techniques – This may take some effort, but get clued up on the fastest, most efficient folding techniques. Store your clothes folded neatly and you’ll thank yourself when getting ready in a hurry!
  • Lingerie – Keep one drawer or shelve exclusively for your lingerie. The trick to maintaining hygiene and quality of your underclothing is keeping it separate from your other clothes.

Barbie Becomes Better With The Newly Released Dolls Having Varied Body Types

Have you come across the huge wave of social media appreciation that has gone Mattel – The Barbie Maker’s – way, ever since the release of their new dolls this year? I did, and it made me so very happy! Now, aside from the original Barbie body, the Barbie Fashionistas Line has “petite”, “curvy” and “tall” dolls too. Isn’t that simply wonderful?

Maybe this diversification of Barbie body types affected me more deeply because I have a closer insight into feminine body image issues. As an image consultant and fashion stylist, I’m privy to the insecurities and desires of women from different walks of life. You have no idea how many of these arise from a mindless longing for “the perfect body”.

Today, with so much discourse on the female body, numerous body types and new definitions of “perfection”, things are changing. Slowly perhaps, but there has certainly been some progress. I mean, look at this Fashionistas Line of Barbies that has been released in 2016. It has dolls with 4 body types, 7 skin tones, 22 eye colours, 24 hairstyles and many stylistic nuances. The first-ever flat shoes on a Barbie are also finally here. Surely, we are moving towards a healthier understanding of diversity and individualism and that is brilliant, no less.

In my opinion, this respect and appreciation of all body types is absolutely essential. We are all born unique, with varied physical features, and that’s just how it is. No brand, no toy and no designer label should set standards of beauty common to all, when we are all born so differently. True, the hour-glass figure has been considered the best female form since times immemorial. But we need to move beyond this mind-block and realise that different proportions suit different body structures and beauty is in fact, in the eyes of the beholder. As women, we should be intensely aware and proud of our bodily form and dress to accentuate our assets. We should wear clothes that flatter our body shape and that will boost our confidence in many, many ways.

With Mattel having realized this, the iconic Barbie is now a better reflection of different feminine body structures and complexions. This is a step in the right direction. I hope you’re headed the same way too!
